As aranhas são artrópodes do Subfilo Cheliceriformes e pertencem à Classe Arachnida, que abrange também os escorpiões, ácaros, e pseudoscorpiões. As principais características são os quatro pares de pernas, o corpo dividido em duas regiões, o prossoma (ou cefalotórax) e o opistossoma (ou abdome), e a presença no prossoma de quelíceras e pedipalpos. As quelíceras são estruturas em forma de pinça que participam da captura de presas. Os pedipalpos têm primariamente a função sensorial.
Todas as aranhas são consideradas venenosas. Como são predadoras tem a capacidade de imobilizar suas presas que são desde pequenos insetos como moscas, mosquitos, grilos, gafanhotos. São elas: aranha-marron (Loxosceles sp.), aranha-armadeira (Phoneutria sp.) e a viúva-negra (Latrodectus sp.). Outras como a Aranha-caranguejeira (Grammostola sp.) e a tarântula (Lycosa sp.) podem criar pânico na população devido ao seu aspecto, mas seu veneno não é capaz de intoxicar o homem.
